The Rocket City

Huntsville, Alabama, known by many as the Rocket City, is home to quite a few interesting places and people. The city is anchored by Redstone Arsenal, a military base, and The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, one of two places where children can attend Space Camp. However, there is much more to Huntsville than astronauts and soldiers. Huntsville is a diverse city with a lot to do! The population of metro Huntsville is just over three hundred thousand, with about one hundred seventy thousand living within the city limits. The city’s total area, according to their newspaper, The Huntsville Times, is 202 square miles. Residents of Huntsville know that the weather can go from one extreme to the next in a matter of hours. Huntsville sees hot and humid winters where highs are often above ninety. However, the winters are also fairly cold, with average high temperatures of 49 degrees. Snow is a rarity in Huntsville, at least in measurable amounts. However, there have been a few large snowstorms in recent history. In 1963, over seventeen inches of snow feel in one day. Blizzard conditions were experienced in the area in 1993 and 1996. Tornadoes, on the other hand, are commonplace in North Alabama. Huntsville has experienced several deadly tornadoes, most notably one in November of 1989, which killed twenty-one people. Tropical storms often bring rain and severe weather to Huntsville as well. Both visitors and residents of Huntsville will find a lot to do in the city. There are a wide variety of interesting museums, including the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The Space Center boasts several space simulators and an IMAX theater. The Huntsville Museum of Art, located in Big Spring International Park, hosts both permanent and temporary exhibits. Children will enjoy both Early Works and Sci-Quest, which are educational, fun, and interactive museums. If you enjoy shopping, you will not be disappointed. The city has two major malls, Parkway Place and Madison Square. In addition, Bridge Street Town Centre has a variety of stores usually seen in bigger cities. If you do not enjoy shopping or museums, perhaps you enjoy the outdoors. Huntsville is home to a variety of parks and greenways. Monte Santo State Park has trails for hiking and bicycling. Visitors may camp there or stay in cabins. Huntsville Botanical Gardens is an award-winning site featuring all kinds of beautiful plants, which vary depending on the seasons. In addition, there are numerous golf courses, including one in Hampton Cove, which is part of the Robert Trent Jones golf trail. The city also hosts a wide variety of sports teams, from indoor football to hockey to baseball. In addition, there is always some form of performing arts you can enjoy, whether at the VBC or Merrimack Hall. There are two notable festivals that take place annually in Huntsville. One is the Big Spring Jam, which is a music festival. It is held every September in Big Spring Park. Also held in the park is the Panoply Arts Festival, which is in April.
