Big black animal? Don’t know what it is?

Hi, I live in the Summerlin area of Las Vegas, and my backyard is a golf course.
Today, I saw this large black animal, it moved like a panther, with grace and beauty, but I don’t think it was a coyote, and panthers dont live in las vegas.

You say it was bigger than or about the same size as a wolf – have you considered that it might actually be a wolf? Black wolves are fairly common. If it definitely moved like a cat, there are three possibilities.

You mention panthers – there is no actual species called ‘the panther’. Panther is the name commonly given to melanistic leopards – that is, leopards with an excess of the dark pigment melanin, resulting in an almost totally black coat. Whilst you are right that leopards are not native to North America (they are found in Africa and Asia), that doesn’t necessarily mean you haven’t seen one – it could have escaped from a zoo or private owner, or been deliberately set free. Here in the UK sightings of large cats are often reported, for example the famous ‘Beast of Bodmin’ – these are thought to be the descendants of animals released by owners when a new law brought in during the 1970s meant a Dangerous Wild Animals licence would be required to keep such animals.

Pumas, also called cougars or mountain lions (or Florida panthers in the case of the Florida subspecies) are found throughout North and South America. They are normally a tawny colour, but melanism can occur in any species, so there’s a possibility you saw a melanistic puma, though this would be very unusual.

Jaguars, which are usually found only in South and Central America, have recently been spotted in southern states such as Arizona. Any of these large cats are capable of travelling long distances, and again, melanism can occur in jaguars (some people refer to these black jaguars as panthers, though this is not technically correct), so a jaguar is a small possibility.
