can a 22 week old fetus survive?
my cousin just found out today that she has a tumor the size of a golf ball inside her falopian tube. She is 24 weeks pregnant. the dr. told her that if she does the surgery, there is a chance that the baby will die. and, if she does not have the surgery, it could burst and kill her. she is torn and i am wondering if at 24 weeks (6 months) what would be the probability of her having a c section and the baby surviving? Anyone been through something like this? she has a medical card and i just dont think that the quality of care she is getting is as honest as it should be. thanks!
At 24 weeks, the survival rates are about 30-50%. Most babies will have some degree of complications, whether or not they could be serious, life-long complications is impossible to predict.
Sounds like they aren’t planning on having to take the baby early unless there are complications, so stay positive that she won’t deliver and things will go smoothly.
If she doesn’t feel like she is getting equal treatment because of her insurance status, she should get another doctor’s opinion. Insurance and ability to pay should make no difference in the care she receives. So get a second opinion, and if both doctor’s concurr, then you should have a bit more confidence that they are treating her fairly.
